My career in Emergency Medicine began with a senior medical student elective rotation in the ED at the University of Chicago in 1975. I was instantly drawn to the excitement bordering on chaos, the varied medical and personal problems of the patients, and the sense of individual commitment and coordinated teamwork among the staff that somehow got the right thing accomplished for each patient. I performed my residency at the University of Chicago and then came to Harbor, where I have spent my entire professional career. After 30+ years of practice in academic EM, I am still drawn to those very things that first attracted me to the specialty, but from a somewhat different perspective than I had as a student. I have found the work that takes place behind the scenes to develop and maintain strong residency and fellowship training programs, to foster research and faculty development, to improve the care we provide to our patients, and to coordinate and fund it all, to be both immensely challenging professionally and immensely rewarding personally.

I have been fortunate to be able to serve our specialty in a number venues: as a member of the EM-RRC; as a board member and president of ABEM; as a board member of SAEM; as a national spokesperson and chair of the Academic Affairs Committee for for ACEP: and as a senior editor for the textbook Rosen’s Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice. I have been honored to receive several awards: the Burroughs Wellcome Education Award from the California Chapter of ACEP, the National ACEP Outstanding Contribution in Education Award and the Senator Ken Maddy Political Leadership Award from California ACEP.

My wife Patty is an artist who with her friend Thelma created an original artwork series to decorate our pediatric ED.

I grew up (well, sort of "up," but not very far) in Southern California and went to college at Stanford. The most memorable part of my college experience was competing in gymnastics for four years. Went to med school at UCLA and then did a "flexible" (now called transitional) internship at Harbor (then called Harbor General Hospital). This was good timing, because Harbor started an EM residency during my internship in 1978. I was accepted into the program and have been here ever since. I was the residency program director for 16 years, and am very proud of the great clinicians and future EM leaders who came through the program during that time (several of these EM leaders are now my colleagues on the Harbor faculty). I'm close to completing an eight-year term on the ABEM Board of Directors.

My wife is a pediatrician in private practice. We have three teenagers, who will eventually all be in college at the same time. My hobby is raising and breeding snakes and lizards. You need to be aware of this before entering my office.

A third-generation Californian, I grew up in Southern California and completed my undergraduate degree at UC Irvine.  After taking a year off to earn a little money, I packed all my earthy possessions into 5 suitcases and, with no clue as to how to take a bus/subway/taxi, I traipsed off to our nation’s capital and spent a glorious four years at the George Washington University School of Medicine.

After graduation, I headed back to the west coast, and did my first residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.  Due to a serious change of heart, I then did a second residency in Emergency Medicine at Harbor and never left, starting as a new faculty member a mere 8 hours after finishing the last shift of my residency (not something I particularly recommend, but it worked out okay for me).

I am currently a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the Associate Program Director (a position I have held for… ACK!... 18 years).  My primary focus is education, both in planning the curriculum for the program as well as participating in medical conferences for emergency practitioners.  A past Chair of the Educational Meetings Planning Committee for ACEP, I chaired the 2002 ACEP Scientific Assembly in Boston as well as the 2006 International Conference in Emergency Medicine, held in San Francisco.   To date, I have given over 1500 lectures at local, state, national and international conferences.  My current passion is “teaching the teachers”, participating in resident and faculty development courses at several universities and academic meetings in addition to being a member of the faculty of the ACEP Teaching Fellowship.

I am a relative “newlywed”, having married the love of my life (so worth the wait) in late 2005.  Jim is the medical director of his democratic emergency medicine group in Denver (yes, you read that right… I live in LA and he lives in Denver and we keep United afloat by traveling virtually every week to see one another).  I love to travel, cook, garden, dabble in creative writing and chase total solar eclipses, having seen four so far (Peru, the Caribbean, Zimbabwe and, most recently, China).  I have no children, but I do have a very crabby cat (Max) and his cuddly brother (Boogers), who were abandoned feral kittens hand-raised by our program director, Dave Burbulys.  (As a resident, you have to know you’re in good hands when your program director hand-raised 5 wild kittens.)

I completed my medical school education at the University of California, San Diego in 1994 and Emergency Medicine Residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1997.  Following that I completed a year as the Chief Resident in Emergency Medicine and then completed a two-year Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship under Dr. James Seidel at Harbor-UCLA as well.  In 2000 I joined the full time faculty at Harbor-UCLA as the Director of Resident Education.  In 2003 I began as the Residency Program Director and hope to have similar longevity to my predecessor, Howard Bessen, who happily maintained the same position for the previous 19 years.  My current interests include resident education and wellness, pediatric emergency medicine and continuing to advance and expand our program here.  Outside of the hospital I enjoy traveling, photography and spending time with my nieces, nephews and God children.  I also have two teenaged labrador retrievers who keep me busier than all of the above and am somewhat of a computer nerd.

As the Director of the Harbor-UCLA DEM Global Health Program & Fellowship, and Project Manager for International Medical Corp’s Emergency Medical Care Development program, I enjoy combining passions for medicine and international work on a daily basis.  Such travels have taken me via tugboats and tuk-tuks—through distant revolutions, landmined fields, and warring countries.   I have had the pleasure of working in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Academically, I am interested in the provision of emergency medical care in low- and middle-income areas.  I received a Masters of Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and a Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine & Travelers’ Health (CTropMed) from the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene, and am also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene.
I also (at least most of the time) enjoy writing and am the author of The Lassa Ward, a memoir about international aid work that the New York Times says, “effortlessly transmits both the facts and the fascination of a bad infectious outbreak.”  I am also the chief editor of the Tarascon Medical Translation Handbook, which helps medical professionals communicate with their foreign-speaking patients in over 15 different languages.  I speak nationally and internationally about global health issues and have appeared on CNN, BBC, NPR, and other media outlets.

My current work and research now focuses in Iraq, where I am helping to build an emergency medicine infrastructure, spanning pre-hospital to hospital-based care.  I was a founding member of the Iraq Emergency Medicine Working Group and am the principal author of Iraq’s National Emergency Medicine Strategy: Five Year Strategic Plan (2009-2013).

I graduated Boston University School of Medicine in 1996 and completed Emergency Medicine Residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1999. I stayed on as the chief resident and later, teaching fellow.  After residency, I worked in a few community hospitals and maintained a part time position at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.  In 2003, I took a full time position as the Clinical Director of the Adult Emergency Department.  During this time, I worked in the National Emergency Department Over-Crowding Score project (NEDOCS), which resulted in a measurement tool that Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and many other hospitals nationwide use to assess their overcrowding and implement action plans.  In November of 2008, I became Associate Residency Director, and happily assumed a role in my primary interest, education.  My other areas of interest include curriculum development, toxicology, sickle cell disease and seizure disorders.

Outside the hospital, I enjoy life with my husband and 3 children.  We are all avid UCLA fans. GO BRUINS!  I also enjoy gardening, playing the piano and running.  I just survived my first half-marathon and may do another inthe near future.

It was a great honor to join the faculty at Harbor in 2009. My colleagues are amazing and the number one reason why I would consider training at Harbor. They are world-renowned, but also extremely caring about resident education and well-being. Despite being well-published researchers, they all enjoy clinical teaching and have tremendous skills from which I continue to learn. One of the best things, of course, is that we all have a life outside of medicine. I'm still learning to surf, but have perfected the art of falling off a surfboard, and continue to go climbing every week. In addition, I continue to participate in running and multi-sport events, although my latest challenge is a two week desert survival course that will rival Man vs. Wild. Despite all of that, however, my greatest commitment is towards growing spiritually and making sure to keep my humanity in the midst of a demanding career. I am an active part of Risen Church in Santa Monica and work with a service-oriented group that studies the Bible in the park.

I grew up in Southern California and completed my undergraduate, medical, and graduate training at Stanford University.  I am currently a Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.  My academic interests center on clinical research methodology, including adaptive and Bayesian trial design, and I participate in the design and analysis of many laboratory, clinical, and health services research studies.  My areas of interest include adaptive and Bayesian clinical trials; translational, clinical, health services and outcomes research; emergency department crowding and disaster preparedness, interim data analysis; the role and function of data monitoring committees; and difficulties surrounding informed consent in emergency research studies.

I also serve as a research mentor for fellows and junior faculty and lecture on the topics of clinical research design and the statistical analysis of clinical trials.  I have had the opportunity to serve as President of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) and as a grant reviewer for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  In 2009 I was elected as a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM).  I enjoy medical editing and serve as a member of the editorial board for the journal Annals of Emergency Medicine, and as a research methodology reviewer for JAMA.

My wife Mallory is a Professor of Medicine here at Harbor-UCLA, where she is the Associate Chief in the Division of HIV Medicine and the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program.  We have two teenage children—a daughter who is in her first year of college and a son who is a junior in high school.  My hobbies include cooking, welding, and hanging out with the family cats.

I graduated from UCSD Medical School and trained in EM at Harbor-UCLA “back in the day”. I recall it was seeing the two life-flight helicopters at UCSD and watching the docs working on them that made me excited about going into EM.

After graduation I pursued my interest in aeronautical medicine on active duty in the US Army, serving as a Flight Surgeon and Medical Director of the 207th MAST Unit (Air Ambulance) in El Paso, TX during Desert Storm. I also served as Chief, Emergency Services for William Beaumont Army Medical Center. After the military I worked for several years as a private emergency physician before joining the faculty of the Dept.of Emergency Medicine at Texas Tech University in El Paso. There I pursued a new interest in Emergency Ultrasound, establishing one of the first comprehensive training programs in Emergency Ultrasound in the country. I later served as Director of the Emergency Department at Texas Tech/Thomason Hospital, before moving to Harbor-UCLA to become its first Director of Emergency Ultrasound. We eventually established one of the first Emergency Ultrasound Fellowships in the country at Harbor. After teaching Emergency Ultrasound for over 10 years, I turned the reigns over to Tim Jang, our new Ultrasound Director, so I could participate in finding solutions to the largest problem facing emergency medicine, the overcrowding of EDs and the threat to our nation’s safety net.

I first became interested in Emergency Medicine during an elective my first semester of medical school.  I found it amazing that a specialty existed that would allow me to take care of any patient that walked in the door, to treat and stabilize the sickest patients, and to be there for patients anytime, day or night.  I briefly explored some other specialty options, but I always came back to Emergency Medicine.  My residency in Emergency Medicine followed a somewhat unique path, as I completed my first two years at the Stanford-Kaiser program, then came to Harbor for my third year of residency after my husband took a new job in Los Angeles.  After residency completion, I worked for a year in the community before deciding that I missed academics.  I came back to Harbor for my Ultrasound fellowship, and have been fortunate to stay on as full-time faculty.  As Emergency Department Director, I am responsible for the daily operations of the ED, a challenging but rewarding task!  I am truly appreciative to be starting my academic career at a place with incredibly bright leaders and mentors, an underserved and inspiring patient population, dedicated and fun residents, and an overall spirit of collegiality and collaboration.

When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, John, and my dog, a crazy puggle named Jack, also known as “the Monster.” Working at Harbor allows me to live in a beautiful beach community, where I spend my free time running, playing soccer and beach volleyball, practicing Bikram yoga, and listening to country music (clearly the best and frequently underappreciated).

I trained in Pediatrics, then followed that with a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, finishing in 1997. The wide variety of ages and conditions seen, the opportunities to use detective-like reasoning while being the first to have a go at diagnosing and treating a patient, and the “who knows what today will bring” aspects of emergency medicine drew me to this field. But, I had no desire at all to see adults with their smelly feet and long past medical histories!

I was awarded a K23 clinical research career development award, and got an M.S. in Epidemiology from the UCLA School of Public Health in 2002. Since then, I've balanced my clinical and administrative duties with continued research in the fields of pediatric procedural pain management and pediatric cardiopulmonary arrest.
