Our Residency Program

Our Mission

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center was established in 1978 as one of the first emergency medicine training programs in the country. For over thirty years the residents of the Harbor-UCLA Emergency Medicine Residency Program have played an integral role in delivering care to the largely underserved communities of south Los Angeles County.

Our mission is to deliver the highest level of care to the patients we have the privilege of treating and to promote the sense of service that brought us to the practice of medicine. These core principles underlie a superlative clinical and academic 3-year training experience that provides Harbor residents with the tools to be leaders, whether in academic or community emergency medicine, or even outside the sphere of traditional medical practice.

Our Foundation
  • A high-volume, high-acuity ED that is the only Level 1 Trauma Center, Pediatric Trauma Center, Pediatric Critical Care Center, Disaster Resource Center, Nursing and Paramedic Training Center and academic STEMI receiving center in the South Bay area of Los Angeles.
  • Education through service of a highly appreciative underserved patient population with a tremendous spectrum, and often high acuity, of disease.
  • Exceptional faculty and mentors with national reputations for excellence in education, research and leadership in emergency medicine and its subspecialties.
  • Ample opportunity to participate in teaching, research, EMS and administrative activities through faculty mentorship and potential fellowships.
  • An outstanding collegial and supportive environment with peers from all walks of life.
Our Residents
  • Possess a strong work ethic.
  • Are as interested in doing good for the poor of our community as they are in becoming good emergency physicians.
  • Have an interest in pursuing lifelong careers as leaders in emergency medicine beyond shiftwork.
