Ultrasound Fellowship

Overview

Ultrasound FellowThe Ultrasound Fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center will be under new direction soon. The fellowship has been training fellows since 2002 under the direction of Mike Peterson, who has been promoted to Vice Chair.

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is a suburban county hospital with an outstanding patient population demonstrating a wide variety of pathologic states. The ED is in the process of acquiring its sixth ultrasound machine.  Our ultrasound machines have multiple probes (curvilinear, linear, phased array, and endocavitary), perform both Color Flow Doppler and spectral Doppler, and store images digitally. We are a trusted provider of ultrasound examinations for the hospital. Our ultrasounds are relied upon by a variety of services for patient care decisions and are permanently recorded in the hospital information system. Limited exams performed include:

  • Cardiac
  • IUP
  • Biliary
  • Aortic
  • DVT
  • Renal
  • Vascular
  • Soft tissue
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Peritonsillar

Harbor-UCLA is an ACS Level I Trauma Center as well as a STEMI Receiving Center serving a large portion of the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. Emergency physicians have a strong working relationship with the trauma service as co-managers of all trauma cases. Surgery residents are incorporated into our ultrasound training program.

Curriculum

The curriculum follows the ultrasound fellowship guidelines developed by the Ultrasound Section of the American College of Emergency Physicians. During the fellowship year, fellows are expected to  perform a minimum of 800 exams,  pursue directed reading, and experience the many aspects of ultrasound teaching and administration. A scholarly project is required during the fellowship. This project can be tailored toward an interest in ultrasound administration (ultrasound director at a private ED) or academic ultrasound. The ultrasound fellow has a wide variety of teaching opportunities involving trainees from the medical student to faculty level.

Location

Harbor UCLA Medical Center is located five miles from the Pacific ocean in the city of Torrance, and is adjacent to the beach communities of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach. Most trainees live in one of these beach towns and easily commute via surface streets, avoiding freeway congestion. Coastal Southern California has some of the best weather in the world, with temperatures and humidity moderated year round by the cool waters of the Pacific.
